JaboToto: Making Urban Mobility Accessible

Affordable ride-hailing solution for Kolkata's price-sensitive market.

The Challenge

Kolkata's urban transportation landscape presented a unique challenge. While ride-hailing services existed, there was a significant gap in affordable options that catered specifically to the city's price-sensitive market. Traditional ride-hailing focused primarily on cars, while many commuters simply needed quick, economical transport for short to medium distances.

The opportunity lay in creating a platform that could efficiently manage alternative transport modes like E-Rickshaws and bikes, which were more accessible and environmentally friendly but lacked the technological infrastructure to operate at scale.

The Solution

I developed an Uber-like application specifically optimized for E-Rickshaws and bikes with features tailored to Kolkata's unique environment:

  • Lightweight Platform: Built to work efficiently on entry-level smartphones with minimal data usage.
  • Route Optimization: Custom algorithms that accounted for narrow streets and shortcuts typically used by smaller vehicles.
  • Dynamic Pricing: Fare calculation system designed to maintain affordability while ensuring driver profitability.
  • Multi-language Support: Interface available in Bengali and Hindi alongside English to improve accessibility.
  • Cash and Digital Payments: Flexible payment options catering to varying user preferences.

The Outcome

While the JaboToto project was ultimately scrapped before full market launch, its development provided valuable insights into the economics of affordable ride-hailing:

  • Market Penetration Strategy: The focus on cost-effective transport modes showed potential to capture a large segment of price-sensitive users underserved by existing platforms.
  • Transaction Volume Model: Analysis indicated that higher ride frequency at lower price points could potentially generate comparable revenue to fewer premium rides.
  • Environmental Impact: The promotion of electric vehicles aligned with growing environmental consciousness, creating potential for positive brand perception and regulatory advantages.

The project, though not launched, demonstrated a viable approach to maximizing market penetration and transaction volume in price-sensitive environments through technological optimization of alternative transport modes.
